James Capper

Basis seiner Werke: Hydraulik. An idea forms in the shape of a pen drawing made on paper. Then a selected drawing will be made in CAD. From this, we can create fabrication drawings and cutting files. All welding and hydraulic system installation is conducted in the studio. Powder coating takes place in the factory next to the studio. Final assembly hoses and system commissioning is conducted at the studio before the machine is sent to its exhibition. In principle, there are five divisions of mobile sculptures that I am interested in making, EARTH- MARKING, CARVING, OFFSHORE, MATERIAL HANDLING, and AVIATION. These divisions all deal with real world problems, such as those approached by equipment manufactures. However, I choose to challenge myself in the concept outlines for instance, not use common propulsion techniques such as crawler tracks or wheels. In the case of the EARTHMARKING and MATERIAL HANDLING divisions make machine walk. 24 O+P Fluidtechnik 11-12/2016

I have been working with hydraulic systems since 2010 and have found that the power transfer and control of functions is in a class of its own. What I believe with the smaller prototype works like TELESTEP and HYDRA SHUFFLE is that if they were to be scaled up to quite a few more tons, they would use similar if not the same hydraulic systems but scaled up. This is not something you can achieve with pneumatics or dc stepper/servo motors. I embrace both engineering and art like many artists in the history of art, like Michelangelo, Jean Tingaly, David Smith and Rebecca Horn. As an artist, I am a problem maker, in the first pen drawing there is an idea that maybe should not exist in the world of engineering. Engineering when you process every step of the journey of making a hydraulic mobile sculpture is very creative; you are kept problem solving from the CAD drawing all the way through to operating the joysticks for the first time! This for me is a very exciting way to work, and a method that is really tailored to my way of working. Was wollen Sie mit Ihren Skulpturen ausdrücken? Freedom to build, create and innovate using engineering and cultivating a conceptual structure or language that allows for evolution in the sculptures I am making. There must be an infinite number of potentials for a sculpture to move using hydraulic systems. Innovation and problem solving, making us see solutions in not so obvious places like the movements in the legs of an insect! O+P Fluidtechnik 11-12/2016 25
